Social Security Disability Benefits (SSD) What is it, who gets it, when, and how much? What do you need to do to apply? What if you were declined?

Default Problems after being approved SSD

I was recently approved for SSD after three years of waiting with an onset date of Nov 2006. At the time I first applied I was getting a check from workers comp for about $3000 a month. Two months after I applied I settled with WC with a lump sum settlement. It was noted in the papers that the settlement was equal to $189 a month, which would be deducted from SSD if I were approved. At that time I took the papers by the local SS office to inform them of the change.

Last week SSD deposited $3200 into my bank account. I was unsure what this was because I was expecting quite a bit more in back pay. I called SS and they said that it was back pay and they had deducted a large amount to offset the WC. They also said that my monthly check was only $158 due to the WC. Will they adjust this once they see that the settlement has been over looked?
I have been drawing long term disability for the last two years and am suppose to repay them once I receive the back pay from SSD. I have an appointment in the morning at the SS office to hopefully get this straightened out. What if I don't get enough back pay to repay LTD, will they just take what I get, or will I have to come up with the difference?
I will also be signing up my two young children for benefits, will they receive back pay, and could the LTD company take their back pay if I don't have enough to cover it?
Sorry for all the questions, but I never dreamed I would have all of these issues to deal with once I was approved.
